I had a patient once who had been a defensive end on a pro team for 6 1/2 years. I asked him how they managed to go from maximum effort trying to get after a quarterback to zero effort when the whistle blew.

He didn't really answer. All he said was, "They make soooo much money - and they are soooo soft!"

Never did find out. I suppose it has to do with listening for that whistle ever since grade school.
