Back in my Boy Scout days, we were at Scout Camp on Mt. Lemmon above the Tucson valley. It was evening and we were in our tents. They were large canvas structures on wooden platforms with two cots in each and an aisle down the middle.
A huge thunderstorm hit the mountain with major lightning strikes all around. Rain and hail just poured down. The thunder was non-stop with huge deafening bursts every few seconds.
Suddenly a bolt hit a tree right next to our tent. This giant chunk wood shot through the side of our tent right next to my head and landed in aisle between me and my terrified tent-mate. The storm didn't last too much longer luckily (or my bed would have been drenched) and we went outside to see that tree still smoldering.
It was a truly humbling experience.
