Alcoholism is generally regarded with disdain and distrust on these boards. One of the current Moderators called one of our posters a "fuking alcoholic", as a matter of fact. That Moderator, complete with that attitude, is able to and does censor posts and posters, using that filter among others.
Having established the rather negative view of alcoholism which is in practice if not admitted, I thought I'd point out that there are alcoholics about everywhere and some of them quite accomplished and admired. I picked Armstrong and Aldrin as being more accomplished than some, and it's looking as if I made a grievous mistake with Armstrong.
Now, don't get me wrong. Active, drinking alcoholics are one thing. However, recovering alcoholics are quite another bird. For most of them it takes a degree of introspection, an ability to confront oneself, and a bit of humility to manage to get there. I admire them endlessly.
As for me, I don't fit that mold. For me it was either quit or die a running coward. I had too much pride, was too selfish. While my first year sober was one of the very, very worst years in my life, it would have been harder to continue to drink. I weenied out, head low, with no noticeable show of courage or fortitude.
