That is a cracking good idea for an Science Fiction story.
So many possibilities.
Here's just one.

The fluorescent lights crackled back, just for an instant, then with a muffled “pop” the interior of the above ground portable lab returned to thick night.
Beneath the sudden blackness, various cooling system fans whirred down, and the last breath of air conditioning died.
In the stillness of the dark room, Abdul-Haafiz Saleem was a statue, his hand still slaved to the mouse.
Before the abrupt loss of main power, and the subsequent failure of the back up generators, Saleem had been reading an urgent, frightening email from a colleague stationed at Zhong Shan, the Chinese Antarctic base.
It detailed a Chinese signals intelligence intercept of American Defense Support Program early warning satellite data.
It read like a nightmare.
DSP satellites within the last quarter hour detected a global cascade of high energy detonations, all at an altitude of 400 km.
The first events occurred simultaneously over the United States and Russia. Then the UK, Continental Europe, China, and Australia. The continuing pattern seemed to blanket the inhabited portions of Earth.
Saleem felt his way to the door of the trailer.
He stood outside on the metal landing, staring over the small town of 60,000.
In all his 55 years, he had never seen, or felt, a darkness so utterly complete.
As his eyes adjusted, he began to notice a very faint shimmering effect on the black landscape.
Above the north west horizon, toward Islamabad, he eyed an appalling apparition.
A slowly pulsing violet and green auroral display, shaped like a spectral jellyfish.
It held dominion in the darkness.

- I don't think it would happen with Betelgeuse.
- While this is not quite the same, of course...
- Supernova destruction zone relatively small
- I'm not concerned with being trashed by a SN.
- We should be working on shielding our systems
- We can start small by protecting personal electronics.
- It's been part of tactical military planning for decades, both for offense and defense.
