If we had respected the Iranians, we would have left them alone to choose their own government, whether it turned out to be a repressive theocratic regime or something different.

It reminds me of what one British officer alledgely told Ghandi - "If we left India it would be a bloody mess!" Ghandi - "Perhaps, but it would be our mess."
