re: Messages in the Snow

I remember back in the 1950s I lived in Wasco, about 30 miles north of Bakersfield California. We had a giant 6 bay antenna to get stations in LA, even though they were snowy. We could rotate the antenna to get stations in Fresno and Bakersfield when they finally got local stations. Sometimes we would tune to a channel that had no local stations and rotate the antenna around and sometimes we could pickup stations as far away as Canada, Kansas, and Texas. When conditions were just right they were quite clear. They usually didn’t last long but it was fun scanning around looking for something interesting. I know there are people who do this as a hobby. Build gigantic antenna rigs and amplify the signal using special receivers to see how far away they can pickup a signal. I’ve heard of them getting stations as far as South America. It’s called TV/FM Dxing. Here are some links to some of their web pages. http://www.wtfda.org/ http://www.geocities.com/toddemslie/UHF-TV-DX.html
