Haven't you heard them talking about "middle class values" and "middle class work ethic" and "middle class respectability" as if only they and no one else had these attributes?
They envy and resent the elite and suspect they are "holding them down", but they ape their values and their ethos and want to switch places with them. But they also hate and fear the lower classes, and suspect them of wanting to "steal their stuff" and take their position. Most of them have a good idea what it must be like to be poor, and a natural desire to be rich, which makes them simultaneously insecure and envious, the perfect target for the promises of Fascism. The other classes fear either those above or below them, but the middle class is at war with everyone else.
