In Cuba, the middle class has been replaced by The Party.
Same mentality, same culture, same class, but with slogans. Milovan Djilas called them The New Class, the indispensable administrative/bureacratic/managerial elite that seems to emerge in any society, regardless of political pedigree. After the Revolution, they make sure the trains run on time, although who's to complain if they don't?
See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Class for a surprisingly cogent analysis.
It is interesting that Djilas' (a Communist) work has been embraced by both liberals and paleoconservatives.
