There are aspects which are very easy to understand.

If one has been in the position.

I was in love, and moved from one state to the next. I left a very well-paying, high-status job negotiating labor contracts and settling minor disputes. I had been busy with the state government, on commissions, committees and so on.

In the new state I couldn't find a job. I found it easier to be an unemployed hot-shot, in my own mind, than to be an employed counter worker. That did not fit my image of me, as inflated as it was.

I finally did go to work for an industrial parts supply company as a counter person and was never so far over my head in my life. I knew nothing about bolts, and threads, etc. Did you know you can tell the strength of the steel in a bolt by the lines on the head? And I was touchy. (At one point the kid in charge of the counter told me to sweep out the offices that night. From then on I swept them out early so he couldn't tell me to do it.)

That was a bit hard on my ego. And I wasn't good at it. Finally the relationship came to an end and I went back to work at my previous job. They had held it open for me. When I told the parts supply company I was leaving, they offered me the management of one of their stores in another city. One didn't need to know parts to manage the people who did know parts, it seems. However, I was tired of not knowing what I was doing.

I think it's a lot easier to have a good job on the end of one's resume than to be the greeter at Wal-Mart or flipping burgers. But when I hired people for a construction company, I liked to find the folks who had done just that. Great attitudes.
