" our belief we're still way beyond any artificial intelligence "

is a recognition of just how INFERIOR we are. We are totally incapable of coming anywhere close in our technolgy to doing what evolution and chemistry have accomplished easily in billions of the most simple organisms. The ability to process large amounts of data rapidly by itself is trivial, a bank computer can do that. How close are we to creating an AI system (of any size) which is capable of spinning a spider's web in any suitable arbitrary environment, much less all the other data processing functions spiders are capable of?
