and I pay considerably less taxes than he does, both in relative and absolute terms.
But I would still change places with him in a heartbeat.
You see, the things we both need, (not just want), cost us both the same: A gallon of gas, a quart of milk, a pound of hamburger, medicine and health care.
In fact, I know people who earn half what I do, and they pay exactly the same as I do for those basic staples, sometimes more, in fact, because they don't have the financial resources I do to take advantage of bargains or buy in bulk, or by paying cash instead of credit. They also pay less in taxes than I do, in both relative and absolute terms, in spite of the tax dodges and shelters I can afford and they cannot, like IRA contributions.
But I do not begrudge them my higher taxes, I am better off than they are, and I live better, and I don't work as hard or worry about my family as much as they do, and I have a better cushion for hard times.
It would be obscene and grotesque of me to complain how much more I contribute to the national wealth than they do.
