...when first we use statistics to deceive.
The exaggerated vertical scale of the graph, although intended to mislead about the magnitude of the relative tax burdens, also reveals quite clearly the Big Lie about Republican tax cuts. Despite all the loud protestations to the contrary, they are indeed always tax cuts for the wealthy.
We can see quite clearly the first Bush raising middle-class taxes, and later we see clearly as Clinton lowered them again. Then Dubya and a Republican Congress take over, and there's a huge spike in the middle class tax burden, and a symmetrical windfall tax cut for the wealthy. Remember Republicans swearing on a stack of Bibles that it was a tax cut for the middle class?
For bonus points, correlate the changing relative tax burden with the changing distribution of income. During the same period in which middle class taxes go down and the wealthy elite's taxes go up, the top 1% increased their share of income in proportion. The large-scale trend in the graph merely illustrates the increasing disparity in income in America. It shows the rich getting richer, and the middle class getting poorer.
Nice try, Tom! Really.
