We are now aware and capable enough that no one wants to just scrape
by any more, except for those who think getting back to nature without
the benefit of technology and modern medicine is the way to go.
Ask the several billion poor people around the globe who have to do
without basic necessities on a regular basis if they wouldn't mind even
living like the so-called lower classes in the USA over their current states.
Even most of the people I see when I go camping with my family several
times a year take just about every amenity possible when "enjoying" the
great outdoors even if it is only for a matter of days. And yes, for the
record, we have a hardtop camper which while nothing compared to the
RVs I see with their washer and dryers, their plasma screen TVs, their
satellite dishes, and everything else, does offer basic amenities such as
AC and a refrigerator. But it is cramped and I never said I wanted to go
back to nature permanently anyway. :^)
Second point: As said here, the environment and world we live in is
changing, much of it by the presence of almost 7 billion humans across
Earth and rising by three births every second. We will have to do
something radical unless we all want our children to go on that eternal
camping trip and make the former European Dark Ages look like a picnic
by comparison. This will include getting off world and becoming very
different beings to survive in those new wild places, most all of which
are very hostile to Earth life.
That is what life is all about: Adapt and survive to reproduce. We are
kidding ourselves if we think things are going to remain as we know them
now. Maybe we and the next few generations can keep the status quo,
but that won't be the case for our children's children.
