re: I wonder how the SSC might have fared
Based on CERN's experience maybe just maybe the SSC, whose demise I lamented, could possibly have been a fiasco, pushing the state of the art in magnets, etc. too early. Given CERN's problems with our decades better technology, perhaps so.
