David Frum makes some points that had been ocurring to me too:

The basic point is that the biggest line reform opponents are pushing lately is that Obama's plan will reduce Medicare benefits, not only through the crazy "death panel" argument but with a variety of of other claims too. This makes political sense, as senior citizens are easy to mobilize and have it pretty good under the current system. But it seems to me and to Frum that whipping up a fervor of "Leave my Medicare alone!" doesn't exactly lay the groundwork for a free-market based alternative. Indeed, I've even noticed some of the complaints being pushed run flatly counter to traditional conservative arguments: complaints that the Obama/Democratic plan would reduce opportunities to sue over medical decisions.
It's certainly true that there are GOP legislators out there with market-based reform proposals, but whether it be the talking points being passed out by town hall protestors or the ads I've been seeing on TV, "Leave my Medicare alone!" seems to be a much more prominent argument. What does that lead to if the GOP wins....?
