Hopefully there will be enough rich people to buy them so the costs can come down for the rest of us, much like most new technologies. The true hybrid (like the Volt) is an ideal transportation solution, with a lot of flexibility to incorporate new tech down the road. The generator could be designed to burn a wide range of fuels, for example.
Remember, even if climate change wasn't an issue, at some point we need to move away from burning a valuable industrial resource like oil just to move vehicles around.
