In some ways we have, in others, we haven't.
Most people don't "think" much, I mean really think. Society as a whole has gone downhill education-wise. They're gullible where they shouldn't be (think Ponzi scheme) and without faith where they should believe (and I'm not speaking just about religion).
Maybe it has always been this way and it's just that the dividing lines between the classes has gotten totally blurred. (I do NOT favor a class system but there is one, whether you realize it or not.)
