You really think Obama got his information from the Amputee Coalition of America? If you track the references, that $38,000 number includes hospital stay, prosthetics, and everything else associated with the procedure.
Obama was trying to make it sound like surgeons walks away with loads of cash, and that greed is the major driver of our medical professionals. That was why he said it, and that's why he picked a number out of the air.
