Elaboration on an idea

Telescopes are pretty expensive, right? Your own scope probably cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

What if an amateur could buy two relatively inexpensive scopes each with a couple inches diameter mirror, place them on opposite sides of his backyard, and tie them together to form an interferometer. He could have the equivalent of a scope the size of his backyard. What would it take to make it easy? To do that without sophisticated laser ranging, etc? Perhaps a small atomic clock, or GPS system?

Let's take the idea further. Suppose Mr. Amateur, who lives on the east coast, has a cottage on the west coast. Suppose he has the same capability, not only to control his scopes remotely via the internet, but also tie them together to form an optical or infrared interferometer.

Suppose there was an online forum, where amateur astronomers could volunteer to slave their scopes to thousands of others if they wanted.

Just suppose.
