You are correct about its original usage, but as the idea of comet seeding has taken hold the term has been generalized somewhat in usage. I don't know if I have seen a formal definition widened to include comet seeding.

Personally I don't care for the generalization. All elements beyond He come from the death of stars so if you are going to broaden panspermia to molecules why not generalize it to elements and declare it proved?
