Great choice
I particularly loved the Chanur series, and it embodies all the things I praised about Cherryh's writing, most strikingly the situation of the lone human, and the long and painstaking struggle to understand (it's just begun where you are). It will also [minor spoiler] have some of those realistic/relativistic space battles I mentioned. I think you'll be happy with it.
