They don't just have a different interpretation of the facts, or some deep self-interest that either clouds their judgement or tempts them to lie to maintain some profitable status quo. There is some of that, of course. But what they are really faced with is a deep challenge to their world view, how they see reality itself.
Think of it this way. Suppose you were being presented with incontrovertible truth that magic was true, or that the traditional picture of a fundamentalist god was actually the way the universe was put together. Imagine if you actually saw a ghost, and the apparition was impossible to explain away as a non-supernatural event.
In other words, imagine a universe that was fundamentally different than the way you thought it was, that everything you believed was wrong and everything you had contempt for was actually true.
Wouldn't you freak out too?
Like I said, its like trying to debate evolution with a Southern Baptist. They simply do not want to live in our world. They can't even bear to admit it might exist.
