The press howls in disbelief, but the knuckle draggers accept it because it removes one of the Boss's contradictions. The official record is amended, just like in Orwell--you know, Winston Smith's old job at the Ministry of Truth. And when the fudge is pointed out by critics or the press, it called "fake news". And the historians of the future will only see the amended versions.

In some cases, the "correction" is so obviously bogus and outrageous only the True Believers can accept it without major eyerolls; like the substitution of one word in the POTUS Helsinki announcement that completely reversed the meaning of the statement. No one believed it, but Trump's apologists seized on it because it gave them an out.
