I don't think Conservatives are any more likely to commit illegal or immoral acts than Liberals. But when you constantly characterize your political philosophy as being intrinsically more moral or upright than others, it makes you more likely to cover your crimes and the guilt of your partisans. And when discovered, it has a more pronounced impact.
Its like when an Abolitionist is a slave trader, or a Prohibitionist is an bootlegger, or a priest is a sexual abuser. Hypocrisy revealed is the just punishment of the smugly righteous--and they know it. Joe McCarthy lawyer, Trump mentor and notorious gay persecutor Roy Cohn was a homosexual, and a prominent American Nazi and Klansman (Dan Burros) was outed as Jewish. There is nothing wrong with being homosexual or Jewish, but in the case of these gentlemen, the irony is especially delicious.
