I don't know how to explain this, he certainly doesn't think he's racist. But if I had to guess, I'd say he's culturally further from his Cuban roots than I am. Urban Tampa's history was more Cuban, both in demographics and culture when I was growing up there than bedroom community Brandon where he spent his formative years. Suburban Brandon was more Cracker than the city. He was further from his Cuban relatives, who were rapidly dying off or moving out of town, and his childhood friends were not as likely to be as Latin as mine. His Spanish, for example, is nowhere near as fluent as mine is, and even his English is accented a little differently than mine.
Cubans aren't immune from racism, but its a different kind of racism than that of the Deep South. I think he was exposed to a lot more of the latter.
