Trump will do anything, say anything, believe anything it takes to get him elected in November. And so will his followers.

What really terrifies me about modern America is not what Trump is or what he will do, but that about a third of Americans do not care, they just feel a personal stake in his succeeding. They are willing to forgive him, no matter what he does or how compelling the evidence against him is and long after Trump is gone those people will still be here. One mad President is just bad luck; the followers of that one President are too numerous and too diverse to be just an accident or a statistical fluke. They are evidence of a profound sickness, a deep inner disease. Trump is not the cause, he is just a symptom.
