Masks may protect your respiratory system to an extent, but unless they're sealed at the edges, you're still susceptible to aerosol transmission - again, all the masks really do is inhibit the wearer spreading it by "catching" or diverting the wearer's spray. Even with this, it still doesn't protect the eyes from aerosol contact, which are always vulnerable. Barring a full-on airtight NBCR mask, you will still be suscebtible to infection, and I'm fairly certain that's the only type of mask that can reduce a risk of being infected - all others merely aid in inhibiting you from infecting others.
While you can and should wear a mask when in a public setting, social distancing is far more important. Again, noone should be leaving home unless they absolutely have to.
