Space/Science » in reply to GOD . . .

Here's what I think.

And its only my opinion, since this question (the existence of god)has no answer. We simply don't have enough information to answer it. We don't even have enough information to properly formulate a question.

However, I believe there is absolutely no evidence of the existence of
god. That doesn't necessarily mean he doesn't exist, but even if god does exist, we have absolutely no knowledge of his properties, characteristics, motives, or expectations of us. We have no idea of his role in the creation or management of the universe, relation to human morality or ethics. And there is no way to determine any of this. We can't even say with any degree of certainty whether god is even aware of our existence. And if he is aware, does he care? After all, I know that there are bacteria living in the soil of my garden, and I may even know they are important, but I know nothing about them. I'm sure they know even less about me.

In other words, he, she, them or it doesn't matter, and it is a waste of time and energy to worry about it at all. I believe the reason people believe in god is that we are programmed by evolution to want to live as long as possible, and god is one way we can convince ourselves we will exist after death. That fear and that feeling is so strong that we delude ourselves into thinking there is a god so we can live forever.

Now maybe there is a god, and maybe that is why he's there. But I don't know that, there is no way I could know that even if it was true, and it is such a tempting thought that I'm not surprised a lot of people have convinced themselves to believe it.

So in order to live my life with some reason, dignity, consistency and order I choose not to believe in god. It makes everything else much simpler. If he wants me to think otherwise, he knows where I am, all he has to do is talk to me. IF there IS a god, I don't think he would punish me for not believing in him. That makes no sense at all. A god like that would be a real prick.

I believe there is a real universe and that it operates mainly by pure random chance, although it is constrained from total chaos by a few physical laws. It clearly exhibits pattern and order, but I see no evidence that it has a purpose. I believe I am a subset of that universe that has achieved some limited self-awareness and some ability to interact with my surroundings.

Actually, that's not a bad deal at all. In fact, I think it's wonderful.
