Not all that long ago Anti-vax sentiment was largely promulgated by fringe lefties in the USA- Hippy-dippy, wheat-grass eating, crystal wearing new age privileged soccer moms that spent all day on facebook 'mommy groups' cosplaying 'researchers'...
But with this pandemic the american right has co-opted the vaccine conspiracy theories, because making the pandemic worse improves their chances in the next election. Yes, they are mainly killing their own followers with the anti-vax nonsense- but they ran the numbers, did a cost-benefit analysis and determined they can afford the death rate in their base... in states like Oklahoma they could kill %20 of their base and still win the state. And if %20 was determined to be what was required they would sacrifice them in a heartbeat without shedding a tear.
Chaos, especially if you are the one creating it, is a devastating weapon in the hands of the ruthless- the GOP has made this a part of their playbook, and they use it over and over. It's an especially powerful weapon for fascists- people overwhelmed and scared by chaos are more willing to hand power to authoritarians that promise to impose order and control. You blame the chaos on your opponents and sell the idea that only a strongman can do what is required to return to normalcy.
Its not an original strategy that the GOP is using, but history has shown its an effective one.
