I was required to attend mass, jump through all the hoops, etc., until I turned 18. But I was given the "Golden Book of World Religions" when I was a child and I read it cover to cover. Read Ram Dass and learned meditation in middle school. Eventually adopted a sort of scientific Taoism.
People can venerate a cactus for all I care, just Do Not Impose It On Me.
