He was always an invented Personna, in my opinion, constructed to market his fiction writing. I've read his stuff, it wasn't bad, interesting even. But he sought to be both author and protagonist character. Autobiographical science fiction. An interesting marketing platform.
But you could be correct in your final assessment. Hope he enjoys his sack of potatoes.
