There's always been Cawthorns and Boeberts on the Right, but in the past, mainstream Conservatives were embarrassed by them (some of them sincerely!) and they denounced them.

But they are being accepted more and more by Republicans, and even those who might oppose them are afraid to speak out and look the other way. Those on the Right who still call them out are purged. Toleration is being replaced by support, and now by outright encouragement. Before long, it will be mandatory. It will be the way the New Right can keep its ranks free of RINOs.

Can you imagine any of the leading Republicans of the past talking like these people; Goldwater, Buckley, Nixon, Reagan, even Gingrich or Bork? Not even George Wallace would have been so proud of his bigotry as is now routinely accepted, if not required, by "the base".

What was once unthinkable, is now acceptable, even routine. These are not the "Conservatives" we once knew, and often bitterly disagreed with on minor points of policy and procedure. This is something different, something ugly, something foul. The GOP may no longer be traditional Conservatives, but the GOP is putting up candidates and conducting campaigns. They are winning elections. But they insist on calling themselves "Conservatives", and wrapping themselves in that mantle. So we are justified in continuing to call them that too. Maybe it will remind them of what they had to give up to get where they are now.

We can handle the NAZIs. They will serve their purpose; to stop the Communists, restore order, defeat the unions, rationalize the economy and restore national pride. But Germany will never let these barbarians rise to power, We can control them.
