Before money there was gold and jewels to ease transactions rather than have a barter economy. Now they are more wants than needs. All people NEED food, water, shelter, energy. Some people WANT diamonds and jewels and toys. Demand is created by need, wants, marketing, whatever, it's still demand.

Scarcity is real. There is only so much food or water or housing or oil or jewels in the world. Supply can be manipulated only if there is no competition.
