What can we do about it? There's little we can, as far as influencing party leadership, or arguing the issue with other Democrats. Even if we could, there's not enough time for a proper debate in the party to be conducted until a consistent position emerges. Its going to be a mad scramble and no one will be happy with the results, and half the Party will wind up with a bad taste in their mouth.
The best we can hope for is that the confusion will distract the country from the usual Trump antics. At best it will demonstrate that the Left is at least trying to clean up its mess, instead of simply lining up and unthinkingly following the leader the way the Right has.
Maybe this will shake the country out of its apathy and political torpor and gets people to thinking that this election stuff is really fucking important, not just boring interruptions to our reality TV.
I just watched The Darkest Hour last night (with Gary Oldham). Its about how Winston Churchill got stuck with the job of Prime Minister in the early days of WWII because no one else really wanted an impossible job, one that was doomed to fail. His first task was organizing the evacuation of Dunkirk. Will we find our Churchill? Our Lincoln? Our Zelensky?
In World War II, The US provided most of the money, The Russians did most of the dying. But it was Britain that was in it from the very beginning and stayed on till the very end. It won the war, but it lost the Empire. And it never fully recovered. I fear the same may happen to us.
"Let us therefore brace ourselves to our duties, and so bear ourselves that, if the British Empire and its Commonwealth last for a thousand years, men will still say, "This was their finest hour."
