There's a few things we need to remember as we consider the latest outrages of this mindless brute.
He may not be totally responsible for his crudities and foul behavior. There may be some physical or mental cause for his unacceptable, and let's face it, self-destructive antics. Even if he actually believes this nonsense, it is evidence of a deep pathology; he doesn't even realize how damaging it is to him that even some of his loyalists are shocked by it. He is no doubt a victim of a deep psychosocial dysfunction, and perhaps even some physical cause, like a hormone imbalance, a loveless childhood or even a simple vitamin deficiency.
And even if he is indeed, as we may suspect, just no god-damned good, we must recall his failings as a human being are not necessarily a result of his political opinions and ideology. Let's face it, you don't have to be a fascist to be a sonofabitch. We have plenty of left-wing motherfuckers, too. I am too well aware, and too often reminded, of the havoc unleashed on the land of my grandfathers. Cubans, both on the island and in exile, used to be a happy and cultured people with a proud history, but no more. After Castro, that is no longer true. That is the Cuban Revolution's most remarkable achievement and its greatest crime.
What this unhappy episode in our history tells me is that our problem is not with Mr Trump. He soon enough, shall pass. The mind-bending realization I have so much trouble accepting is that so many Americans have blindly accepted this behavior. Many are just too ignorant, apathetic or lazy to really notice or care, or too cowardly to do anything about it. Others recognize his madness but continue to follow him unthinkingly because they are at least partially sympathetic to his ideas. Still others know how dangerous and evil he is but still support him because they have convinced themselves there's something in it for them. They are willing to put up with his crimes because they have fooled themselves they will benefit from them. And all these categories together got him elected, twice, fair and square. We are the country that won the Civil War, but we are also the country that lost it.
We've all wondered how the German people, the race that gave us JS Bach and Albert Einstein, one of the most cultured and civilized communities on this planet, embraced Adolf Hitler and tolerated his crimes. We always smugly thought; "Well, maybe the Germans, but it can never happen here."
Well, we were wrong. It DID happen here, and even if we wake up from this nightmare tomorrow, the MAGA minions will still be hidden among us, and the ghost of American Fascism will never again be fully put to rest. That is what scares me, what fills me with disappointment and regret, with shame, and yes, guilt, for the country I love. I will go to my grave wondering if I could have done more.
