GRB 261005B: Enhanced Swift-XRT position
From: K.L. Page at U Leicester
Issued: 2026-10-06 04:17 UTC
K.L. Page, P.A. Evans and M.R. Goad (U. Leicester) report on behalf of the
Swift-XRT team:
Using 1707 s of XRT Photon Counting mode data and 3 UVOT images, we find
an astrometrically corrected X-ray position (using the XRT-UVOT alignment
and matching UVOT field sources to the USNO-B1 catalogue): RA, Dec =
255.33924, 1.58872 which is equivalent to:
RA (J2000): 17 01 21.42
Dec (J2000): +01 35 19.4
with an uncertainty of 2.2 arcsec (radius, 90% confidence).
This position may be improved as more data are received. The latest
position can be viewed at UKSSDC | Swift-XRT GRB positions (swift.ac.uk). Position
enhancement is described by Goad et al. (2007, A&A, 476, 1401) and Evans
et al. (2009, MNRAS, 397, 1177).
This circular is an official product of the Swift-XRT team.

On the evening of 5 October 2026 (UTC), two space telescopes, NASA's Swift and Fermi, both caught a burst of gamma rays (the most energetic form of light) from a spot in the sky near the border of the constellations Ophiuchus and Hercules. The burst flickered with several peaks and lasted somewhere between about 20 and 90 seconds, depending on which instrument and energy range measured it. Swift's X-ray telescope found a fading X-ray afterglow and pinned its position to within about 2 arcseconds, but ultraviolet, optical and infrared searches hours later found no visible afterglow. No distance has been reported, so how far away it is remains unknown. It looks like an ordinary long gamma-ray burst, the kind usually linked to the death of a massive star.
How unusual is it? This is a typical gamma-ray burst: moderate brightness, an X-ray afterglow found, no visible-light afterglow and no distance measured. A redshift (distance) measurement or a supernova or other counterpart found later would make it more notable.
