"A future gone wrong"
No question about it, but there was a glimpse of a brighter side. All the signs advertising off world opportunity and the empty apartment buildings give one a sense that Earth has bottomed out and depopulation might eventually restore the balance.
At the end of the film, wherever they were heading (the north?) looked pretty nice. (I always look for a silver lining)
If you have ever read Peter Hamilton's "The Night's Dawn" Trilogy, you see a similar take on our future, a grossly over populated earth with major ecological problems, but a very positive colonization effort that offered a way out.
The non-fiction version of the future may be less bright and there may be much suffering but imo the Earth will restore the balance one way or another.
BTW the trilogy mentioned is a lot of fun but not great literature, just an engaging space opera.
