Vigil
Vigil
(for R Wolfe)
I have never worn a uniform,
never held a loaded weapon,
let alone fired one.
Yet fate called me
to sit the warrior's vigil,
the death watch,
with a man I never met
but knew and loved
as brother.
We had an hour or two,
improbably connected
by satellite, computer
and soul,
until the enemy came
and the connection was broken.
He sent many before him
to annouce his triumphant coming.
And I am left
with a broken lance
and a riderless pony.
