What Reynolds obviously never considered is that unless the middle class feels secure, and the lower class feels it can progress, the system is inherently unstable. Those who are comfortable now will have to watch their backs and fear their colleagues--all the time.
All those traits he mentions are a necessary but not sufficient condition for entering or staying in the middle class.
There's a lot of clever people with plenty of self-discipline and delayed gratification out there who have suddenly realized they're going nowhere, no matter what they do or how hard they work. And they are pissed. Mr Reynolds is going to have to convince them its better to be lucky than smart.
I don't think they want to hear it.
