It was a live victim they were hoisting. As things started going gunnysack a crew member hit the switch which released the cable. That guy avoided one terrible ride.
I think you're right. He didn't have enough power to do it all - main rotor, tail rotor, hover and lift at 10,300 feet. Stalled out.
