Found a solution
It turns out winME doesn't care if its a domain or a workgroup. I typed the domain name in under workgroup and it worked. Sometimes its the obvious answers that are so elusive. I won't say how many hours I spent on this. My opinion of winME did drop a few notches in the process. I prefer win2000 overall.
