It's not like soccer is some kind of magical sport that unites all of humankind in peaceful brotherhood and harmony...more like wild soccer hooligan riots in the UK and Europe and nationalistic passions boiling over in Latin America (hell, two Central American countries even fought a war once over a soccer match)
The real reason why Americans have so little interest in soccer is because there's so few good, exciting scoring chances in a typical soccer match, and even fewer goals. 90 minutes of men in shorts running up and down the field, with maybe only 5 or 6 real scoring opportunities, and maybe 1 goal, maybe none - that just doesn't turn on most American sports fans. I suppose that if you fully understand and appreciate the strategy, exactly what each player is doing out there then soccer could be as exciting as baseball - or just as boring.
The author is dead wrong about baseball only being played in Japan and Cuba, by the way. Many other countries in Asia, the Caribbean, and Latin America have adopted baseball as a major sport.

America's lack on interest in soccer means very little
