The use of the term "Oriental" has now been deemed offensive. A new one on me. Didn't know "Oriental" was one of the bad ones. However, it has been standard practice for minorities to switch "approved" and "offensive" names back and forth to keep the shivering white liberals on the defensive ("People of Color" = good. "Colored People" = bad) so I sometimes lose track.
...The law immediately reforms only a lone statute that requires the solicitation of minority contractors for construction of city water mains.
The law read: "Minority group members include, but are not limited to, blacks, women, native Americans, Orientals, Eskimos, Aleuts and Spanish Americans."
Shin's bill replaced "Orientals" with "Asians" and "Spanish Americans" with "Hispanics."
What Shin has yet to find out is that "Eskimo" is considered insensitive by a few highly sensitive northern indiginous people, being an Indian--damn, I mean Native American--word meaning "those who eat their meat raw" or "blubber eaters." The preferred term is apparently "Inuit," which like about ninety percent of all tribal names means "We people" or "Us" (as opposed to everyone else, which is "Them.")
