Happened to catch a bit of Rush today and he was ranting about the CA legislator calling for lighter books because of the weight of student backbacks. While the CA situation is unknown to me and lightening books sounds silly, Rush obviously is out of touch with school problems.

When my daughter was in middle school they had no lockers (a trend brought about by drugs). She was required to carry all her books and supplies in her backpack all day. The weight ranged from 28-30 lbs. and she averaged carrying them at least a mile each day.

There was a time when unneeded books and supplies were stored under your desk in Elementary and Middle School. Can't do that anymore, they would be stolen. Newer schools have no lockers due to fear of drugs and weapons.

I never bitched about it and neither did my daughter but heavy backpacks are a definite problem and Rush has no clue on this subject.

P.S. She is now in a HS that has lockers and the overweight backpack is no longer a problem
