One man (woman) shows...

I know these type of libraries, small cubbyholes with minimal overhead and where one person is stocking shelves, carrying and loading and unloading HEAVY boxes of books. Some are often older folk - who do so more out of a labor of love than any renumeration.

In fact I know a WWII veteran (80 something!) who still carrys boxes of books in and out of a small library stuck in a strip mall and who has spearheaded a new library project in San Diego's outlying areas for years, only to be cut down again and again by their city council.

He works extra hours to make sure that their friends of the library churns a profit. Sidewalk sales were slow but after a brainstorming session they had the whole center participate with fast food, etc. They manage to pull in about 30k a year in book sales. Which is a LOT.

This allows them to pay their rent, buy more shelves to expand to a larger spot in the mall. (and because they must go through city regulations they get ripped off by contractors when building strong shelves "to code" and who charge the "government" rate ;-)

50k after taxes is probably about 36 take home. Yes, that seems on the high side for a normal librarian - but some of these one-man-shows put in 50 hour weeks and do as much lifting as a warehouse person, manage, account and stock - all why they are heading towards retirement. For these type librarians I say give em the 50k - because their towns would usually be without any library without them.

However, if indeed they are just "come in and sit at the desk" staffers 33k seems more appropriate.
