It is fascinating.

And Captain Kangaroo would have done well in the military in SE Asia in the later '60s. In costume. A lot of folks were getting their tickets punched, "It's not much of a war but it's the only war we have."

(Even so, guess which Son of a Celebrity who later became President was AWOL and not there? Hint - they love him here!)

Getting wounded on Suribachi makes sense. The story about standing up and moving folks forward during the landing doesn't make a lot of sense.

The Japanese had the tendency to let opponents land relatively unopposed, and the fighting heated up, a lot, as hot as anyone ever saw, as people moved inland.

They, like the Germans in Europe, were justly afraid of the overwhelming naval gunfire which covered the first few miles from the beach. (Naval guns will reach farther, but with less accuracy and can't be directed as well.)
(Rommel wanted his reserves relatively forward, within range of the ships, but other senior military people wanted them farther back.)

It was not hard for the Allies to achieve local superiority in the Pacific islands with air and naval fire, and it would have been really, really dumb for the Japanese to try to engage in a land-sea artillery duel, especially with hostile troops landing, too. When you look at the relatively small perimeter and the relatively large number of naval guns, you get an idea as to how ugly it could get for any enemy, no matter how well dug in, to stand up to it.
