I'm perfectly happy with Windows 2000, and have NO plans to upgrade until I am physically forced to. It has given me no problems at all, with proper maintenance. I am running a lot of old stuff, including AutoCAD 13, and Office 2000. I tried Internet Explorer 6, but almost immediately switched back. Am running Netscape 4.7.
Windows 2000 was still on the shelves at Fry's Electronics, and should be available many places on the internet.
My Macs, now, are cutting edge, with the Jaguar (OS 10.2) operating system (really Evil Unix* dressed up in a nice, friendly bunny suit.) These take some maintenance too--you need to track updates and such. There is some hassle with older software, but I have never gotten anything that actually doesn't run. I am using OSX-Native versions of Office, Netscape, and most other major programs.
*And no, I can't define it. I just know that all the network guys I've worked with who deal with raw Unix eventually end up standing in front of the computer, pointing at it, and screaming "EVIL!! EVIL!!"
