Not the same

Sorry, Bowser.

The "No taxation without representation" protest was over citizenship rights. The British government of the time claimed their right to tax American colonists as British subjects. The Americans were asserting that, if they were true subjects of the Crown, they should be granted the concommitant rights (representation) that accompanied the obligations (taxation), the same as other subjects. The taxation argument was predicated on citizenship by the taxing authority itself.

Americans also pay income taxes on income not earned in the US, and can be subject to income taxes in the nation in which the income is earned as well. So there is precedent for non-citizens paying taxes in the American tax code already.

Tax codes not predicated on citizenship, but rather on geographic origin of income, don't support the citizenship argument.

Besides, people living here to work already enjoy a limited benefit from the infrastructures of the communities in which they live.

Regards--
Mary Anne
