...then you will be able to listen to the BBC, German news in English and many other cool news shows - which cover many stories not covered on the internet regarding local world news.
Whenever the sun is down SW signals become much clearer - so nighttime listening is the only way to go for California anyways.
If you're driving one of these or perhaps this is the entertaining and educational ticket. Unfortunately the mid-east supplier Jackys is one of the only places in the world you can purchase these models (why Sony hasn't realized there is a huge culture market in the US and market it here through Fry's and other huge electronic wholesalers is beyond me) and so one has to pay a duty-fee & shipping of around $100 on top of the listed price.
How did I learn to appreciate SW listening? Well in Europe SW is as common as FM is here. My 93 year old grandmother doesn't watch any TV - she gets her news through a beautiful old Telefunken. That way she can keep busy while listening.
And if the internet goes down and an EMP takes out satellite carrying phone and video signals - SW will still tell you what's going on around the world.
