...but you know how I am... That's a common misuse of the word barbarian. It refers to a comparitive lack of civilization. It does not refer to a tendency towards pillaging invasions.
It was dreamed up by the Romans who applied it to anyone who was not Roman.
The Chinese had a similar word and probably still use it to describe anyone who is not Chinese. Certainly they used it to describe the European traders during the age of sail.
